Over the years, we’ve heard about Nalgene bottles being used as everything from a vase to a tripod. But using a bottle to defend a dog from a bear? Our team collectively held its breath while reading Kayleigh’s story. But spoiler alert, we’re happy to report that Kayleigh, her dog Phoenix, and the bear are all okay.

While the two were hiking in Connecticut, they unexpectedly encountered a bear and her cubs. Although Phoenix wasn’t provoking the cubs, the mama bear was very protective and lunged at Phoenix. Thinking fast, Kayleigh grabbed her Nalgene bottle from her backpack and hit the bear on the nose with it. This stunned the bear and allowed them to get to safety.

After a visit to the vet, Phoenix is recovering well and getting lots of love and cuddles for her courage.

We’re so grateful that everyone is okay and that one of our bottles helped Kayleigh and Phoenix escape a frightening situation! We pride ourselves on our bottles being built for life, so we’re glad a Nalgene bottle was there to help when life got a little scary.

Did you know that all our bottles undergo a closure strength test? During quality control, each bottle is filled with about 4 lbs of weight and hung by its strap for at least 2 minutes. This helps ensure that every bottle and cap can hang with you on your most rugged adventures.
