We Made It Simple… Michelle + Kenya Made It Theirs.
Q: In 3-4 sentences please introduce yourselves and give a short bio of who you are.
A: The Outdoor Journal Tour was founded by Kenya and Michelle Jackson-Saulters. A self-proclaimed, “Live, Laugh, Love” girl Michelle is an army brat whose family now resides in Wiesbaden, Germany. Michelle loves everything “outdoorsy,” from camping to kayaking and climbing. If it’s outside and involves a challenge, she’s into it. Kenya, on the other hand, isn’t a huge fan of the whole, “sleep outdoors thing,” She enjoys the outdoors via summer concerts, having drinks on patios, journaling, and taking short walks in the neighborhood. The consummate Aquarius, Kenya brings the mindfulness component to The Outdoor Journal Tour. She enjoys writing, doing research on stars and galaxies, and watching Portuguese dramas on Netflix.
Q: You founded The Outdoor Journal Tour and the #wehiketoheal movement, how would you describe your mission?
A: The Outdoor Journal Tour is a hybrid health organization that combines the healing tenets of outdoor activity with mindful meditation and introspective journaling. Our mission is to create a safe and sacred place for women to reconnect with themselves, each other, and Mother Nature.
How can people get involved with The Outdoor Journal Tour?
The easiest way to stay abreast of our events, challenges, and new merchandise is to join our mailing list and follow us on Instagram. Our Instagram community is our largest community, but our mailing list is where we share important updates, and blog about our personal lives and experiences outdoors.Get Involved!
Q: What are some of the benefits of hiking, journaling, and meditating?
A: Outdoor activity has long been linked to stress reduction as well as improving overall mental well-being. Journaling and mediation have similar benefits. Journaling has been proven to help strengthen communication skills, and aid in both emotional and psychological healing. Meditation can also be a means to help reduce stress, increase self-awareness, and reduce anxiety. When all three of these methods are put together, they become a form of self-care cocktail for healing, connection, and personal development.
Q: How do you find a balance between work and your personal life?
A: It can be tough, especially since quarantine. Now, our phones, computers, and work notebooks are never out of arm’s reach. And we often find ourselves starting work earlier and ending it later than we did before. However, we made a commitment to pause for at least 2 hours a day to do something together. That usually includes sharing a meal, watching a movie on the couch, or maybe coloring on our iPad. For individual self-care, Michelle likes to take evening walks and Kenya enjoys training at her gym.
Q: How does Nalgene make your life simpler?
A: Water is essential, especially when you live in a hot and humid climate like Georgia. Michelle and I typically carry the wide-mouth 32-ounce bottle during events and day hikes. It provides us with the perfect amount of water to stay hydrated from start to finish. Plus, its ability to clip on our backpacks makes it easy to carry. Of course, we also love the adhesive surface that allows us to display all of our cool stickers from ours and other organizations we love and support. The stickers usually serve as a conversation piece/icebreaker for the women who join us at our events. It’s not uncommon for them to pull out their Nalgene bottles and give us a little sticker tour of their own.
