MAN-SIZED BIRD… CREATURE… SOMETHING
MOTHMAN
When a local newspaper reported the sighting of a “Man-sized bird… creature… something” in 1966, it sparked nationwide interest in what would eventually become the legend of the Mothman.
Large, swift, and terrifying, the Mothman is tied to several paranormal activities in the area, including missing dogs and the tragic collapse of a suspension bridge. At the same time, residents also experienced UFO sightings and additional encounters with “men in black,” who attempted to intimidate witnesses into silence.
Whether the Mothman was the perpetrator or merely sent to warn the people remains a topic of debate.

Home of the Mothman
The most famous sighting of the Mothman was by two couples traveling near Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Several other residents reported similar sightings.

Definitely Not “Just an Owl…”
Eyewitnesses claimed the Mothman stood up to 7-feet tall with a wingspan reaching 15-feet wide.

Fast for a Moth
The two couples who initially encountered the Mothman sped back to the safety of Point Pleasant. The Mothman flew after them, easily keeping pace at up to 100 miles per hour before breaking off pursuit at the city limits.
WHAT LURKS BELOW
LOCH NESS MONSTER
While the Loch Ness Monster (Nessie) is tied closely to the body of water she’s named for, accounts from as early as the 6th century Picts, including tales and stone carvings, suggest she or her ancestors may have initially inhabited the River Ness.
All accounts agree that she is extremely large and serpentine with dark-gray-to-black sleek skin. She has a sinuous neck, and her head has been described as “horse-like,” though witnesses disagree on whether she has a mane. Many report that Nessie is covered with humps and horns, suggesting a dinosaur-like appearance. Most agree she propels herself with flipper-like appendages.
There have been very few accounts of direct aggression from Nessie, with most agreeing that while she is powerful in appearance, she is shy by nature.

Home of Nessie
Nessie makes her home in Scotland’s Loch Ness. But she’s rumored to have relatives living in other lakes around the world, like “Champ” (Lake Champlain, U.S.) and “Ogopogo” (Okanagan Lake, Canada).

A Harrowing Chase
In 1954, the fishing boat Rival III used sonar to track a “large object” shadowing the vessel almost 500 feet below it. The “object” followed them roughly half a mile before giving up pursuit.

A Meteorological Nod to Nessie
The Loch Ness Clansman Hotel’s forecasting stone offers insights into the day’s weather, and warns that when the stone disappears, “Nessie’s about…”
UNPREDICTABLE, ELUSIVE, ADORABLE
JACKALOPE
While stories of horned hares exist around the world, the earliest account of the North American Jackalope, a jackrabbit with the horns of an antelope, comes from Douglas, Wyoming in 1929.
While not regarded as being particularly aggressive, the jackalope and its sharp horns can be profoundly dangerous if provoked. The milk of a jackalope doe is believed to possess medicinal properties, and the meat of a jackalope has been compared to lobster.
But catching a jackalope is no easy feat. If that’s your goal, keep your carrots and lettuce for a salad. The best bait for a jackalope is its beverage of choice: straight whiskey.

Home of the Jackalope
While the Jackalope’s first recorded appearance was in Wyoming, there have been sightings throughout the U.S. West, including an increasing prevalence in Colorado.

Pray for Lightning
The jackalope is incredibly rare, largely because it will only breed during lightning storms.

Harmonizing Hares
Cowboys claimed they heard voices singing along with them by the campfire. The jackalope can mimic any sound from human voice to the rumble of a passing train.
